Consumer Engagement at ACTA Summit

Topics:Consumer Engagement Summit
Quiz: What was the number one consistent piece of feedback from our ACTA Summit (aside from the quality of the speakers and the excellent networking opportunities)? Answer: The importance of reinforcing consumer involvement in clinical trials from the very beginning. This won’t surprise participants at the Summit, who witnessed the engagement of our consumer attendees in question time, as speakers on panels and networking throughout the event. You may know that ACTA’s Strengthening Consumer Engagement in Developing, Conducting and Reporting Clinical Trials Reference Group has been established for consumers and consumer advocates to work closely with researchers and policy-makers to strengthen consumer involvement across the whole research continuum. In addition to members of the Reference Group in attendance, ACTA put out a National expression of interest for consumers to receive free tickets to the Summit and received an enthusiastic response! Consumers attended the Reference Group breakfast on Day Two of the Summit to answer the critical question: where to next for consumer engagement? In answer to this, the group is now working to develop guidance and tools for the clinical trials sector to involve consumers and raise awareness about the role and value of clinical trials to the broader community. ACTA will keep its members, consumers and stakeholders apprised of these tools as they become available, and a workshop on consumer involvement which is coming up in 2019. In the meantime, we’d like to send a warm thank you to all of our consumer attendees for bringing their passion and valuable experience to the discussions and putting real faces to the work of this group.
